Firm History

Where We Have Been & Where We Are Going

The Firm has evolved from numerous other Firms that have merged or been bought out over several decades. Since the completion of our building in 1984, there has always been at least one CPA in this location. Many of our clients have been coming to the same location for 30+ years even though the CPAs have changed several times.

Our most recent history began with a CPA named Larry Mallon acquiring the client base of Jim Echols in 2010, which is when Justin Bowden came aboard as an employee. In September 2012, Justin acquired the client base from Mr. Mallon, and then added the client base of Stroud Financial Services (Glen Rose) in January 2018. Since Justin took over in 2012, the Firm has grown exponentially which paved the way to bring in Chrystal Tanner as an additional owner in January of 2023; creating what is now Bowden & Tanner, LLC.

During the busiest times of the year, the Firm is literally taking on multiple new clients every day. We welcome clients of all sizes and complexities from the people just needing tax returns prepared from one Form W-2 to the people that own multiple multi-million dollar companies.

Pricing

The Firm has some standard fees for certain recurring business services such as payroll reporting and sales tax returns, but most of our fees are based on the time required at our normal hourly billing rates. Billing rates vary depending on the experience level of our staff. We strive to make our services as affordable as possible to help generate long-term relationships with our clients. Generally, we can use the information gained from initial consultations to determine an estimated fee range. Call today to set up an appointment.

Justin Bowden, CPA

Justin is a graduate of Texas Christian University, having obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 2004. After obtaining the bachelor degree Justin also obtained a Master of Accounting degree from TCU in 2005. Justin is a licensed CPA in the State of Texas.

Justin started his career in public accounting while in school as an intern in 2003 and has remained in public practice throughout his career. Having worked in two mid-sized public accounting firms in Fort Worth, Justin came to work for his predecessor at the Granbury Firm in February 2010. In September of 2012 Justin purchased the Firm from Larry Mallon and has been the Managing Member since that time.

Although the current client needs primarily focus on income tax and small business services, Justin also has an extensive background in attestation services (financial statement audits) that he gained at his positions with prior firms. Although the Firm does not offer audit services, the experience in audit has proved to be very helpful in advising individuals and business owners.

Chrystal Tanner, CPA

Chrystal received a Master of Accounting degree from Tarleton State University in August of 2018, and holds a Bachelors of Science in Accounting from the University of Phoenix. Chrystal was licensed on August 6, 2020. She also has an Associates of Arts in Health Care Administration from the University of Phoenix. Chrystal also has held a license of cosmetology since 2004, and has held various positions in the food service industry in the past.

Chrystal joined the Firm in July of 2014 as an intern, and in July of 2016 she started as a full time staff accountant with a focus on bookkeeping, payroll services, QuickBooks consultations and tax preparation.

Debbie Smith, CPA

Debbie graduated in 1988 from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, and was licensed as a CPA in September of 1991. Debbie also graduated from Georgia State Law School in 1995 with a Juris Doctorate degree, and was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 1996.

Debbie started her career in accounting while in school with two internships, one as a public auditor and the other as an internal auditor with a national bank headquartered in Atlanta. Upon graduation, Debbie went to work as a public auditor with one of the Big 8 accounting firms. Debbie left public accounting to work at the Coca-Cola headquarters in Atlanta, GA in finance and accounting. Debbie then served as the Controller of one of the top heating & air companies in Atlanta, and later as Controller for a large commercial construction company and a craft beer manufacturer.

Debbie joined the firm in November 2021 with a focus on tax and bookkeeping services Debbie moved to Texas last year with her husband and her cutting horses, and very happily made Granbury her home.

Angie Bearden

Angie’s career has focused on bookkeeping roles in various industries including retail, real estate, logistics, construction, and software development companies, as well as working in public accounting for an Irving based CPA firm.

In November of 2018 Angie joined the Firm and is responsible for much of the bookkeeping, payroll, and sales tax services provided to our clients. Her background in public accounting and multiple industries gives her valuable insight into the accounting operations of our clients.

Haley Bartholow

Haley Bartholow joined the firm in July of 2021 and serves as our Office Manager and Receptionist. An artist by training, she holds a MFA from Columbia College Chicago and a BS from Texas Christian University. Haley has administrative experience in a variety of fields such as fine arts, education, hospitality, medical, insurance and retail. She is a native of Fort Worth, and is happy to call Granbury home, where she resides with her two young boys, Luka and Niko.
